ABOUT EMBROIDERED PRODUCTS

Embroidery has several steps, but starts with a computer CAD drawing or digitizing (hand calculating) the design for several industrial sewing machines to follow a stitch pattern. This pattern is sewn on a bolt of material, usually a washable twill. This bolt will have several hundred patches being produced at the same time and each patch will be cut-out by hand, one at a time. These are further trimmed and readied for an edging

application. The edging is applied one at a time by an interlocking weave (merrow) machine or blade cutting to follow an unusual edge and then stitched.

There are several twill colors to choose from, however these along with threading do not match a pantone® or PMS® ink color. Colors are matched as close as possible referring to a pantone®, unless you have access to the many thread and twill charts. Special twill material can include reflective, felt and satin. Unique threading can include metallic, glow-in-the-dark and UV.

The basic elements of embroidery are the size, thread coverage, edging and backing.

With your patch design facing its intended presentation, its size is measured by taking the length plus the width and then dividing by two (Example: 4”+3”=7” 7”÷2=3 1/2”).

Thread coverage refers to the amount of threading that covers the base twill material. Favor-IT Emblems uses a three tier system (50%, 75%, 100%). Obviously, if the twill is

completely covered, this is 100% coverage. On the opposite extreme, 50% coverage or less is best described by having straight-line text. This minimum coverage does not incorporate a logo, fancy font/lettering style or multiple thread colors. Once a logo is used or complexity is involved, the thread coverage falls into a 75% level.

When a geometric design is involved, a traditional merrow edge is used. This merrow edge is easier to attach to clothing, hats, etc. Stitched or laser-cut edging is applied when following an unusual shape. While this can be sewn-down, it is recommended to have a special backing such as iron-on material.

Since any patch can be applied by sewing, optional backings provide the end-user with application choices such as; plastic, heat-seal (iron-on), adhesive (like double-side tape), Velcro® or a safety pin.
